Ozzie says Sox good enough to win World Series

August 24, 2009

Via Joe Cowley’s twitter:

Oz: “This team is good enough to win the World Series.”

See, here’s the thing about winning a World Series: All it is is beating one of the best teams in the opposite league in a seven game series. Sure, the Sox could win a World Series. Hell, they took three of four from the white-hot Yankees just a few weeks ago.

The trick is GETTING to the World Series, which is much harder to do by comparison. Any team could win a seven-game series at any given time, but winning so many series over a 162-game season is quite challenging. The Sox certainly don’t seem fit to make the postseason. Neither do the Tigers, though, for that matter.

To paraphrase Billy Beane, the playoffs are entirely luck. Once you get there, anything can happen. Is there any greater example of this than the 2006 Cardinals, who went 83-78 during the regular season? They proceeded to go 11-5 in the postseason to win the World Series.

So sure, Oz, the 2009 version of the White Sox could win the World Series. How about getting there first, though?
